The Memory of Tomorrow – Returned

The four of us, like ramblers venture into different territories exceeding space, time and dimension. Reminiscing our explorations, these illustrations are the visualized creative reflections of our journey. R4MBLER includes four Hong Kong comics artists, Felix Ip, Sam Tse, Keung Chi Kit and Pen So.
In 2019, R4MBLER organized their first exhibition “The Memory of Tomorrow”. The exhibition has been returned and will extend the time-travel journey. R4MBLER collaborates with GoArty and showcasing the artworks at Peak Galleria. The exhibition shows four different world views nspired by daily life and environment. Through the artworks, audiences can travel four future worlds, “Hong Kong Machines - Envisioning the Futures”, “Cybernetic Body”, “Helmet” and “Mobile Fortress – city Escape” exploring the prospects and imaginations of future technology by the artists. Under the future development, some old Hong Kong sceneries and features seem to be backward but still being retained. Since these elements are still worth to be appreciated, it is hope that the exhibition could remind the audience about their roots.

Helmet

In the future, the world belongs to virtual reality. Our VR helmets immerse us in virtual reality, teleporting us to a new dimension where nothing is impossible.

Here, dreams are fultfilled, desires satisfied and creations realized. Savouring the past, we envision the possibilities of the future, totally indulged in the pleasure of this ultimate perfect world.
The concept of “Helmet” was come from the huge and glamorous VR helmets. In the future (actually the present as well), human beings are indulged in social network, virtual world and electronic entertainment etc. and all the new technology. It seems like the head is being protected by covering their eyes with the helmets, but in fact, people would rather stay in the electronic world than the reality.

Mobile Fortress – City Escape

In our perpetual quest for better living, people embrace technological advancements, which radically change our lives, making it so much more comfortable and convenient. The Hong Kong I venture in is a city where people indulge in new technology and pop culture. Yet, little did they realize how these changes have posed far-reaching impacts on our tradition, heritage and historical culture.
In the heart of Hong Kong stands a cluster of century-old tong lau (tenement buildings), which people call “Walled City”. Having a unique nature and complex background it survived demolition but most people consider it a disgrace to the image of modern Hong Kong.
A testimony to Hong Kong’s architectural heritage and its bygone era, the residents of the Walled City refuse the fate of its demolition, so standing firm and united, they fight against all odds to preserve it. Thanks to exclusive technology, which has transformed the Walled city into a mobile compound moving far away from the dangers of the place I have known so well, “His” legacy prevails.

Cybernetic Body

Despite the phenomenal development of advanced technology in this cyber age, the humble fate of Humankind to go through the “Four Sufferings” – birth, age, sick and death is inevitable. Yet, in my journey into future, our relentless efforts to improve our lives shed new light on this unattainable wish. Supported by innovative technology, we are implanted with cybernetic body parts to challenge the basic law of life. Cyborgs are no longer science-fiction.
There seems to be no right or wrong on these fantasies and who knows? In my journey, the only certain thing is, there will always be a vision, and where there is imagination there is boundless possibilities.

“Hong Kong Machines - Envisioning the Future”

I savour Hong Kong in its heyday back in the 70s and 80s. I miss its glamour and reminisce its charm. Travelling beyond boundaries, I ramble back to my childhood days, recollecting the beautiful pieces as I attempt to reconstruct them into the future Hong Kong I envisage.
Through the imagination and brushstrokes; Using Hong Kong elements as the main theme; A style of an unique “Hong Kong” characteristics was created in this artwork series.
